BOROUGH COUNCIL

REPORTS ADOPTED. THE FORTNIGHT’S MEETING. At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday night the .following reports ’ were read and adopted. FOREMAN OF WORKS. : In accordance with Instructions I have caused a heavy coating of gravel to bo spread on Seaiey Street between Sandes street and the Terrace. 217 loads of gravel were carted to this undertaking. With regard to Mr. W. Thorbmn’s complaint re-flooding of his property in Robert Street, I beg to report that this hooding is caused during heavy tide overflowing the bank at the western end of Robert Street and blocking tlie culvert with gravel. The culvert has now been cleaned out and afl surface water drained away. The erection ot the Fodder Shed authorised, has now been completed. The fodder stored therein will now be secure from flood water. Good progress is being made with tho concrete drain in Karaka Road, a further 400 feet being completed by the end of next week. With regard to Mr. Hnlse’s letter re state of footpath in front of his property—as this was a* small maintenance work I caused the slip on the footpath to be cleared and the footpath repaired. I am also having the hawthorn along this street cut down Augustus street Bridge is practically beyond repair, it is m a very deteriorated condition. I would respectfully recommend that this bridge which is at present 57 feet long be shortened to say 30 feet by erecting concrete walls and filling in with earth. To erect these walls and re-build the bridge with some of ithe old timber would cost approximately £3O. In accordance with your instructions I have paid a visit of inspection to the site fh Tommy’s Lane, where the road is subsiding. I consider the point in question is a danger to pedestrian traffic and recommend that a concrete wall 29 feet in length he constructed along the boundary, which undertaking I estimate at £6. WATER SUPERVISOR. Work on No 1 section of the race has been the usual supervision with extra attention to the ram at Irishtown. an dto the Wa iota hi pump. Fluming and tunnel work has been carried out ■•'very Sunday, including patching the j ironwork and renewing slabs etc., m tunnels. I hope: to have Bull’s Battery main cut clear of the race next week. There will then be only one or two small pipes connected with the race, and as time permits I will have these connected up to the new main and the localities supplied with water from the reservoir. Work No 2 section has been ithe clearing and tarring of as much of the fluming as possible, before th© anti-sv-phon is finished. All tunnels on this section received the usual Sunday overhaul and repairs effected where required Maugakirikiri Stream continues to supply a fair amount of waiter but not sufficient to supply all needs. We hop© to have the head water turned in earlynext week. In the town supply during the last fortnight several leeks have been repaired. All service pipes from Bull’s Baittery main have been disconnected and connected up to the new 4in. main in upper Karaka Road, and . the Sandes Street service main I hope to have connected up before the end of I the week so that these localities will then have a continuous supply. Late on Thursday afternoon a had break occur ed on the old 4in. main at the top of Mary Street. On opening up the ground I found that a new pipe was required to he put in. This undertaking was carried out next day, the water supply in respect of this section being : off for 23 hours. On the same day another leak occured on the new bin. ; main in St. Par rick’s Row, Block 27- ] This proved to be a split in the pip ] and was attended to at once, in ac- . cordance with instructions I have laid i 285 feet of pipes to Mrs. Brown’s pro- i (perty in Robert Street, Tararu and ] everything is now working satisTao-t { torily. ( ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. } Since my last report everything m i my department has been running f smoothly. Horn Kora current has i been cut off occasionally but I find ( this has been unavoidable. The prin- ; cipal work in hand has been the High i Tension extension from Bowen Street c to Poflen Street South, to supply the , Shorthand Fisheries Ltd., with current. ( This work should have been completed ( but for the delay in tiio delivery of - c Transformer and cable. These should i lie completed as soon as possible. TK 0 ( he to hand any day when the work will * installing of A.C. meters in the Para- j wai section has been completed. The | meters for the block area which have ( been on order for a considerable time : pro not vet. to hand. Six new con- ' sumers havo been connected to the mains since my last report making the > total connected to date 898. i FINANCE COMMITTEE. j Tho following were recommendations ; of the finance committee: — i That the work of laying new lin pipes in Irishtown, as recommended lw the Water Committee, he proceeded < with at once, and cost ot same be ehnrg- !
