CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 25. “Shop-lifters must be punished severely because shop-keepers must be protected and they have a right to trust customers,” said the magistrate in fining Francis Matilda Richards £lO for stealing a piece of curtain valued at 9/6 from a shop. The magistrate refused to order the suppression of her name, and •said it was really necessary in all shop-lifting cases that the accused should be sent to gaol.
