ERGOT POISONING.
m CATTLE. A CURE DISCOVERED. There have been several cases or Ergot poisoning in cattle on the ITauraki Plains lately and many farmers have had to lose valuable beasts through there being no cure available. In one ease a farmer lost 20 head, another 18 head and some have had to shoot their grown cattle suffering from the poison. Ergot is a parasite that grows chiefly on ripened seed and the cattle mentioned received the poison from the hay fed to them, from the stacks cut last season. Another herd at Kopuarahi is now badly poisoned and the owner is likely to have a serious loss. hi'r. C. S. Shepherd. Veterinary Surgeon of Paeroa, has been successfully treating animals and has been the cause of saving a number of good cattle. He is at present treating the herd at Kopuarahi arid has managed to save 12 cows that were seriously effected at Pipiroa. His treatment has been very effec tive and cows that have been reckoned as incurable have been destroyed when they may have been cured.
