HEAVY TRAFFIC.

DAMAGE TO ROADS.

COUNCILS SHOULD DO MORE.

(Press Association.)

AUCKLAND. May 25,

Replying to a deputation of the suburban bodies with regard to damage to roads by heavy commercial motors, Mr Massey .did not think it possible to raise all the money required for main road’s maintenance at the present time. New Zealand’s credit was good in London, but if we sought to borrow millions for this purpose and were found not getting good value for the money our credit would drop to zero. Many county councils could do more than they were now doing. He said there would be legislation . limiting the weight of vehicles carried on certain roads, and an adjustment in the direction of revenue that was received from license fees of commercial and motor vehicles.
