RACING NOTES.
The £BOO he won at Hawera and the stake he picked up at New Plymouth on Saturday brings Gloaming’s winnings to just under £26,000. If Mason can keep him at top form long enough Carbine’s record may go. Most likely it would have gone by now but for the bad luck the brilliant New Zealander experienced on the last two Australian trips. When Pluto won the Middle Park Plate, R. J. Mason led in his sixteenth winner of that event.
With Gloaming, Vespucci and Egotism, Mason Captured five races and scored a second on the Taranaki trip. Gloaming won the three classics of the tour, Vespucci picked up both the principal handicaps at New Plymouth, and at Hawera Egotism ran a second. As a result, Mr Greenwood’s racing account was swelled by the addition of well over £2OO0 —not a bad week’s earnings. ' The Wellington writer Sir Lancelot says that with reference to the cable stating that a Melbourne sportsman had offered 3000 sqvs for The Hawk, 'it might be explained that prior to the Wellington meeting The Hawk was offered at 3000 guineas to the purchaser of The Cypher, also to a Melbourne firm who were acting on behalf of an Indian client, and to Mr H. Chisholm. The terms were not accepted, and after the double win at Trentham the price was raised to 5000 guineas. The Hawk was placed under offer to a Victorian buyer at the figure named. The agent for the Indian buyer offered 4000 guineas, but that was refused by Mr T. S. Roulston, acting on behalf of the Douglas Trustees. A Sydney writer says that the cru-: sade by the officials against foul riding is having a salutary effect. Suspension of leading horsemen like McLachlan, Munro, and O’Bryan, has shown that no leniency is to be exercised, with the result that there has been a marked improvement on Sdyney courses. The same writer is of the opinion that apprentice riders should not be allowed to ride in two-year-old races, a suggestion worthy of consideration, for young and green horses act with greater confidence for older and experienced horsemen. ,
