POKENO-NGATEA.
A POSSIBLE SERVICE.
MAILS AND PASSENGERS.
At the last meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, the following letter from Mr. W. Heaven of Maramarua, was read:—
“The East Coast Road, from Auckland to the East Coast, is nearly all metalled except a portion of your county, which is the worst part of the road, and if you will do your best to get this done the settlers on the Plains could have a daily mail leaving Auckland in the morning at 7.10 a.m. delivered to the post office at Waitakaruru by 12 noon, Pipiroa 12.30, and at Ngatea at 1 p.m. A car leaving Waitakaruru at 5 a.m. in the morning could connect at Pokeno with the 7.50 train to Auckland and return from Pokeno or Auckland with the train arriving at Pokeno from Auckland at 6.20 p.m. The 'morning papers could be delivered on the Plains by mid-day. As soon as sufficient passenger and parcels service was offering, I would suggest advertising for someone to put on a ;motor-’bus service between Ngatea and Pokeno. I think there are plenty of people who would only be too pleased of the chance to run the sendee if it w r ere known.
“I hope you and your councillors Will do what you can in the matter as it is going to be a boom to the settlers of the Plains and the places en route to Pokeno.” The letter was received.
