FARMERS' UNION.
RECENT RESOLUTIONS.
(From Our Travelling Reporter.)
. At the last meeting of the Ngatea branch of the New Zealand Union, the following communication from the secretary of the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Union (Mr W. H. Huey) was read: — 1
“Afi a meeting of the Provincial Executive, held on December 13, the following resolutions were .passed, and I was instructed to forward same to the branches: — 1
“ ‘That this meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, representing, as it does, the different districts throughout the province and all sections of producers, having heard the proposals of the Producers’ Committee in regard to the establishment of a permanent board representing all producers’ interests fully explained, is strongly of opinion that the Government would be justified in giving the proposed Producers’ Board full legislative authority, and agree to the suggested levy, of not more than 1/per 100 head of sheep and Id per head of cattle per annum, so as to provide the Board with.. sufficient finance to carry out its duties, including a comprehensive scheme of advertising New Zealand produce of all kinds in the markets of the world.’
DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION. “ ‘That this executive is opposed to the movement as unnecessary and tending to divide our ranks at a time when co-ordination is so urgently required. There is nothing in the objects of the proposed union which is not already in the objects of the Farmers’ Union. The commercial side of the dairying industry 4s already efficiently dealt with by the National Dairy Association, so why it is necessary to start- a separate organisation for dairy farmers is not apparent to this executive. There can be no possible complaint on the score of representation, 15 out of the 17 members of the Provincial Executive being dairy farmers. This exec-u- ' five is, and always has been, willing to consider any concrete proposals for improvement within the union, and to that end two efforts have been made to bring about a conference between this executive and the executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union.’ “A further resolution wrs passed, strongly repudiating the aotion of Messrs Fear and Grace, of the Daily' Farmers’ Union, who formed a deputation to the Prime Miinster, and who claimed to represent the farmers of South Auckland and the Bay of Plenty. The gentlemen mentioned put forward some preposterous proposals regarding the reduction of mortgages which, in the opinion of this executive, were tantamount to confiscation of property, and, if carried into effect, would undermine the foundations of our national credit. ALTERATIONS TO TARIFF. “ ‘That this executive is of opinion that no alteration whatever should be made in the tariff, except by Parliament, and that the Act enabling alterations to be made by Orders-in- *» *.
