, DISCUSSING THE TREATY
' l (A. and N.Z. Cable.) (Received 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 3. . "The Dail Eireann has re-as-sembled.
Mr. O'Connor asserted that -the chairman of the Irish delegation had written to Mr. Lloyd George saying that he had given certain guarantees with regard to the unionists. Mr. O’Connor demanded to know what these were, .‘declaring that .this was a peace -shoved down the necks of the Irish people by bayonets. /Mr. .Beasley, supporting the ratification!!,, said .that the members seemed to think more of political formulas than of the solid reality of tha Irish nation. He added that -the nation was not made for Jhe Dail 'Eireann, but the Dail for the -nation. ■ . . Countess ” Markievicz said she “pould not make a declaration of fidelity to the King or the commonwealth of the British nations, which were holding down India and Egypt. Therefore, while Ireland /is not free, I am a rebel.” Mr. J. J. Walsh said that nine out of every ten of his' constituents 'favoured the treaty.
