OBITUARY.

MRS. N. PAYNE. Expressions of regret were general ..when i/i became known that the' death had occurred, yesterday afternoon, at a private nursing home at Auckland, of Mrs. Nathaniel Payne, a well-known resident of Thames. Deceased, who was a daughter of tho late Mr. and Mrs. R. Hawke?, arrived in the from Ireland with her people, and settled., at Thames. About 48 years ago she married Mr Nathaniel Payne, and lived practically-all her life at Thames. Until attacked with tho illness which caused her death, tho late Mrs. Payno always enjoyed' good health. She possessed a bright and cheerful disposition, and wonderful energy. In tlio early and prosperous mining days / of Thames, she was in the front rank in-musical circles, having a very sweet soprano voice and musical ability of no mean order.- For. many years there was riot a concert arranged that her name did not figure on the programme. Her home was tho rendezvous of all music-lovers, and the many pleasant hours, spent there will live in the memory .of her largo circle of friends., Through her efforts large sums were raised by public entertainments tor benevolent work at Thames, the hospital being an institution that- she work-. ed very hard for, and which she assisted considerably. She sang in St." Geqrgo’s Church choir for many years, besides taking an active interest in the choral and other musical - societies in the early days of Thames. -Sfie leaves a husband, two sons and two daughters, Mr. E. Payne, of Thames,, JVTr. P. Payne, of Auckland, Mrs. McWilliams, of Waihi, and Mrs. Teasdalc, of Thames, to nfturri their great loss. Tho funeral will •leave her late residence, Mackay Street,, tomorrow. Wednesday, for Shortland cemetery, calling at St. George’s Church en route. ' ' A PIONEER. (ProsQ Association.) t = . NELSON, November 15. Tho death is reported of Mrs. Francis Edwards, relict of the 7 ate Henry Edwards, long connected with the firm of Sclanders and Company. ' Deceased arrived in the ship Lord 'Auckland, in February, HM?, with her parents.
