HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH.
WON BY HAMILTON.
Yesterday a team from the Hamilton High School came to Thames by ,the mid-day train. They were met at the station by representatives from the Thames High School, and taken to the school. The girls of the upper forms prepared luncheon for both teams, in the gymnasium, the • tables being tastefully decorated. The girls waited on the tables. Later, the teams journeyed out to Parawai Racecourse. The weather was most unfavourable. A high wind was blowing right down the field, and the heavy rain had made the ground very slippery. The ball soon became greasy, and, altogether, the conditions were against a good display of Rugby. The teams were: — Hamilton (Maroon and Black). — Backs: H. Barrett, K. Campbell, A. Lemon, C. Thompson, T. Masters, R. Jamieson, E. Carter. Rover: L. Shepherd. Forwards: L. Scott, Craig, K. Hodgson, E. Karl, Iv. Anderson, R. Hall, and Head.
Thames (Amber'' and Black). — Backs: K. Lockett, lOHetherington J. Dodd, L. Cooper, L. Hook, H. Maingay, G.- Thorp. Rover: A. Morrisey. Forwards: I. Lockett, J. Buchanan, A. Judd, A. Wilson, G. Buchanan, E. Dean, and D.' Johnstone.
When the teams lined out, it was obvious that the visitors had a great advantage in weight, their forwards being very solid. Hamilton kicked off against the wind, and for a time play was in neutral territory, but the visitors threw the ball about in style, and began to run up a. score. Before half-time, Jamieson, Hodgson, Thompson, and Campbell had crossed the line, one try being converted, and Jamieson landed a penalty goal. The wing three-quarters were bot\ fast and good scoring men. When half-time sounded, the score stood: Hamilton 17, Thames nil. In the second half, the local boys played well. J. Lockett stopped an attack, and, with the wind behind them, Thames attacked. The Hamilton defence was very sound. They came down-field, and, working the blind, Campbell scored at the corner. After give-and-take play, Hetherington marked, and Avith a good kick landed a penalty goal for Thames. In the final quarter, Thames were defending, and only the. good Avork of Maingay and Hook kept the visitors out. The former played a splendid game. Splendid passing and fielding by their spee'dy wings gave the visitors three tries, one of Avhich converted, and the game ended: Hamilton 31, Thames 3. Mr. Vedder Avas the referee. After the match the teams had tea at the racecourse, and the Hamilton boys left'Yor home by the afternoon train. i
