PROSPECTING.

IN COROMANDAL COUNTY. Mr. W. H. Madill, who with his brother, Mr. J. Madill, has been prospecting and mining between Gumtown and Tairua, has. lately been here (says the Coromandel News), and reports some very promising finds in that locality. He is working in a district that has never been pro-' perly tested, and has found some very rich silver ore, similar to that which was formerly worked the Great Barrier Samples from several different outcrops give highly payable results for silver, with a little gold. addition to this, he states that he has discovered a strong gold-bearing leader, samples from which assay some 76 ounces to the ton. He has a few bags saved, and is at present engaged in driving to cut the leader at a depth. He is in about 95 feet, and expects to cut the ore in another 10 or 12 feet. A trial crushing will then be sent to the Thames School of Mines battery. Mr. Madill. is ' a prospector of .great energy and wide experience, and, in addition to gold and silver, he has had considerable work on ores of lead, copper, iron, zinc, and the rarer metals such as molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, etc., and he misses nothing when he is examining the geological features of a district, but sends in samples of all sorts for confirmation or identification. He says there is plenty of room for one or two more parties in the same locality. '■>"'.
