BETTER OFF BY WAR
MEINS INCREASED BY
SOLDIERING.
How people may be better off through their breadwinners going to war was shown by Mr L. 0. H. Tripp (says the Post), who cited a •case which had coma before the Wellington Patriotic Society. Mr Tripp was presiding at the meeting 1 of the Advisory Board of thei Federation of' Patriotic Associations.
That meeting expressed its satisfaction! at the scale of separation allowances made by the Government. The case, in detail, was as follows:
Mr A., earning £>18(> a year, enlisted. He- applied to the Financial Assistance Board, and [the Board made the following grants: Pi'emiuiins on insurance policies, £9 6si;
intern!, on mortgage, M 4s; rates, £1,17s lid; on account.of board and lodging, wife and child, £39 ; total £54 7« lid. The .husband allotted to wife 4s pea- day—pea- week, £1 8s; separation allowance 1, 7s; child's allowance, 5s 3d—making £2 Os 3d per week, or gross £104 13s; total £159 0s lid, and no husband to keep If the husband was living sub home, in order to let thei wife have the same income, he would want at least another £1 per weac, i.e., he would want a tftal income of £211 0s Hd per annum,, which is
v £3l 0s lid in excels of his pre-war income of £1180. This shows that, with the present allowance*, Mrs A. is better off financially than she was before hor hueband enlisted. When the aanended scale of allowances comek^ >int.o operation on the Ist January, 1918, the present gross annual income, excess will be increased to £82 10s lid per annum, and Mrs A., after paying the balance of .-S per week for board a,nd lodging for herself and child (the Financial Assistance Board pays the rest), wiU enjoy a net income of £'H° lOs clear of all liabilities, exce.pt for thtpurohase of clothes, c.to.
