INDEPENDENT MECCA.
A recent cablegram stated that the Grand Shereef of Mecca has been notified (that his assumption of the title of King of Hedjaz has been definitely recognised by Britain, France, and Italy. His Highness the Grand Shereef of Mecca, supported by the Arab tribes of 'West and Cen - tral Arabia, proclaimed independence of Turkey and of Ottoman rule, under whose maladministration and inaction the country had so long suffered. Operations' against Turkey began about Oth June, 1916, amd resulted in the signal' success of the Shereef'« forces. Mecca, Jeddah, and Taif were soon captured. Medina was be-, sieged, and the garrison capitulated^
