The Chief liLspe^ctor of Fisheries (Mr L. F. Ay nan), in the report presented to Parliament, makes some important recommendations for the development of the fishing industry of the Dominion. Mr Ayson considers that, given a., free hand, and the necessary amount of money, he could put the fisheries of the Dominion on a sounder basis than obtained in any other State in Australasia. ' The chief recommendations.made are that fisheries which are at present controlled by the Marine Department should be. removed therefrom aiid placed under a separate department. This department could in iihe meantime be staffed by a secretary or director, who would also bo the chief inspector, a cleric, and typists, and three /permanent) assistant" inspectors for both the North Island, and the South Isbnd. The services'of the police could ibe largely utilised as at present. A. steamer on the lines of the biggest trawlers used in. England and Scotland should be obtained for the , use of the Department. This would be ] 160>ft in length. It would not be posn sible to obtain a sxiitable vessel out here, but one could be built for 512,----000, or could be purchased at a, less fiyure at Horn*?. In the course of further detailed recommendations,, it was urged that tio eiicourac'o the industry the GovernVaent should erect, or assist in the erection, of fish freezing and curing! plants and fertiliser works., and tha,ti a. bonus should be gjiven for the production of some fishery products.
