SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 1913. EDITORIAL. KAURI TIMBER COMPANY.

Our M o*T T c !

Fear of None ; Favour to None ;

Justice to All.

AND THE COUNTS COUNCIL,

The application of the Kauri Timber Company to the Thames County Council for assistance in connection with the opening up of a large block of valualble timber will, we are confident, b©'given every consideration. The fact that the construction of roads and bridges is necessary should • serve to evoke public interest for it means that when the timber has been cut out a valuable asset will be handed over to the County Council for the general good. At some time or other that body must xmdertake this work and the proposal of the ; Kauri Timber Co. tlierefore comes at a most opportune time. The merajbers of the County Council arc keenly alive to the posslbiltjes of the future and recognising that tjie work of company will be but the pr^our- \ sor to an impoitant scheme of lar«d settlement, they are prepared to give the company every encouragement and assistance. Exactly to what exent that assistance will go will not be determined until the engineer has reported on the whole propel d—as to what effect the ' construction of roads, bridges and ta'am-line would have upon this part of the district. It is scarcely conceivable that injurious results will follow, but there is always the necessity for the County Council to safeguard its interests and tiho.se of its ratepayers, and the lo'.-al body in this particular connestiDn. is not going to shirk its public duty. We hope, in the interests of the district, that no objection will be. found to the carrying out of such an important work and that the Council will find itself in such, a posh ion as will enable it to encourage and assist, in an undertaking fraught with great possibilities.
