COMING SHOOTING SEASON.
OPEN EOR IMPORTED GAME.
WELLINGTON, March 11
The Animals* Protection Act makes every third year from 1910 a close season for imported game (other than deer) and nativo gams, but there is a provision that on « petition of an acclimatisation society iho district under its control may be .exempted -wholly or in part from the operation of the section.
Advantage is being taken of this provision by a number of acclimatisation soecties to secure a modification, of the doso season which would otherwise obtain this year. Petitions from various parts of the Dominion have been received by the Minister for Internal Affairs, and numerous requests for modification of th^ close season provisions ha.ye been granted. The classes of game to which the exemption is to apply have not yet been de-
cided. "Imported game" covers plveaspjnite, quail, and in some portions of the district hares. Theso animals are protected in that portion o.f the district extending southward from Paekakariki, but northward of Paekakiriki they are prescribed as veimin. It is expected that the close season will bo strictly maintained all over the country so far as native game is concerned. Probably an op-en season of a month for ducks will' be grantled in some parts of the Dominion.
The season for imported game in the Wellington district will extend, it is anticipated, from May 1 to July 31.
