Tiiei Labour Department believes that the present (bright -weather will make a difference to the glutted market for unskilled labour. - Bteports are expected from various districts of both islands indicating* that harvesting; amd other oWrpations have brought work to hundreds of hands that baive been eagerly awaiting, it. "Yet the Department,'' said, one of the officers to-day, "does not expect that even a. continuance of favourable weather will" altogether end the days of anxiety for all the men who are unemployed just now."
Authority has been, given, to the Public .Works Deipartmenit to engage a large number of men for the coopeuwtive railway works in the Stratford district. The men, will be sent away in batches of 20 per week, an-J preference will be given, to. local married 'applicants. Thirteen of.,tlu painters most in need of somethinj.' to 1 do, ih'ava been sent to paint, the Porirua Mental Hospital. Sir J. G. Ward's remarks about the building of new quarters! for the Legislative Council have Ibrought- some hope to idle carpenters.
