The estimated population of th« Domiiiiion at the and of 1908 was 1,020,713, of whom; 960,642: were Europeans, 47,731 Maoris, 12,340 Cook Islaaids. The increase, of Europeans in I - months wns 31,158. -A gratifying feature is the improvement in the birth rate, "to wihich cause 16, 897 of the increase ia due. Immigrationi is responsible for 14,2^ 1. In both oafies there is am excess over the previous yea,re for a long 1 time past.
