Eeween 7.30 and 8 o'clock last night Samuel Brooks, who was recently employed at a fireman on th.-: steamer Miaheno, miade what is believed to be an attempt to m.uirder bi? wife; He returned home the worse, for liquor and struck-his'wife, rendering her partiailly unconscious.
While in. this state she heard one or more shots fired from a. revolver. A man "named Geor«<e. Thomas camt* to the house ait "*lhis juncture and grappled, with" 'Brooks, who immediately turned the revolver on himself and blew his brains out.
A five^ehailiibered revolver wa« found beside, the body, four chambers having been discharged.
