MAIN TRUNK LINE.
By the North Mand (Main Trunk Railway, the total distance between Wellington and Auckland Avill be 426 miles, Oif this distanoe, 336 miles is now 1 open for traffic, leaving' a gap still to open of 90 miles'. The section from Taihaipe to Mataroa,, 5? miles, is now being opened for traffic,' and a further length of 18 miles will probably be ready for opening within a few months. Thesie two lengths-, together with a further 1 distance of ailiout 25 miles at the north end between. Taumaranui and Raiuiriiiiu ? , on which goods traffic is also b§ing carried, and the further section between, Waiouru and Rangitaun, I^lo miles) on* which the 'rails are already laid, reduces the ga,p (on which .considerable eonstrncr ■tion works still remains to be done) to about 32 miles. The whole of the work's along this distance are manned so as to ensure their completion/ by the end of next year, and a eoiisiderable part of the .construction is so far advanbed that it is anticiroted that by January next the distance between the railßeads. \rifi be induced to only 12 miles.
