Sergeant Darby- submitted: the police reports on the) 'licensed premises and also' as to the manner m which! they were conducted: Wittht tho exception of some of the houses at Thames the reports werefavorable., the conduct of the houses being described as good. The exceptions' were said to be thei Governor Bowen, Lady Bowen ,Pacific, Salutation, Imperial and Eixchange. It was stated by Sergeant Darby that the licensees of these houses were suspected of Sunday trading, and that owing to . the watchfulness of those-.associated with the hotel, the inmates were warned before the police could' arrive and secure evidence -which wO'UId warrant ai convictiom. Mr Clendon, who appeared, for the owners of some of thie premises, said that the fact that no prosecution had taken place would surely •■warrant the belief that though he Sergeant suspected* 'Sunday trading there was nothing tangible in- the r objection! taikeni. "'. :._..^y, After- discussion the committee commended the Seargeant and the police for, theiir action, and while granting! the licenses warned licensees 1 that a conviction for Sunday trading would result in the offenders losinig their licenses. With reference tio repairs .to several premises, Messrs) Miller and Clendon, on- behalf of the various owners and licensees, said that the recommendations! -of the police and the Committee would' be carried ouib.
