PRINCE OF WALES BIRTHDAY.

In connection with, the observance of the Prince of Wales' Birthday it is interesting to note that shops and offices are not compelled to- close under the Act. The Shops and Offices Act of 1904 (Section 16) reads as under:— >

•The following provisions shrill apply with respect to the following* special days—that is to say, Christ^ mas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, 'Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour day, the. birthday of the reigning sovereign, and any day which, pursuant to proclamation by the Governor, or declaration by the G-ovemmjemt, or on the reqjuesb of the Mayor oi" Chainnain of a local authority, is generally observed a,s a,public holiday or half-holiday: '(a) Where «jny such special day falls on tunO'thiei' day than the ■ statutory closing day, it shall be deemed to be a sufficient compliance with the requirements of this Act relating to th© weekly half holiday if thie occupier of a • shop in the Iv-'rcft duly complies with thosci requirements. 1 on the special day in lied of on tihe statutory closing day. (b) Where any such special day Mis 'on a (Sunday, then for all the purposes of this section the next succeeding • Monday shall be deemed to be -the special day in ■lieu of the Sunday, and the provisions* of this section shall be construed accordingly. (c) Where any suchi special day falla on ai Sunday or 'Monday, the occupier of a shop th)a>t is usually closed' for a half holiday on Saturday may keep his shop open on tifoe Saturday next preceding such special day, provided that he closes his shop a£ one o'clock in the> afternoon on some other ■working day in the week. It will thius b© seen that as the Prince of Wales' Birthday is not included in the "special days"- quoted above, ©hops and offices mary remain open on that day.
