Our Oyster Fisheries.
THE) AUCKLAND BEDS. '! (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 10. . The following reference to the Auckland oyster fisheries appears! in* the annual j'eport of the Mktrine Department:—"lt was proposed to lease the oyster beds in the Hauraki Gulf whiohi bordered on private land to the occupiers of such land, but after regulations for this had been prepared there were found to be certaini difficulties mi the -way which prevented the intention to lease being carried' out. It was then, decided to open such of the beds as might be fit for picking, and the chief inspector of fisheries! examined them for the purpose of ascertaining their condition, with the result that he reported that those between Gull Point, near Auckland, and Beam Tail, the southern pom* of Whangarei Bay, were fit for picking. These beds have therefore beeni opened and oysters are now be- ? ing takeni from them by persons who have taken out licenses to do so. In order to prevent interference with the closed beds!, and to see that email oysters are not taken from those that are open, arrangements1 have been made for Mi" Bennett, the local inispeotor, to devote the whole of his time to this duty during the open season, and to employ ara assistant 1 when required. . The beds in the northern oyster fishery, which extend i from Whangararu Harbour Jo the I North Cape have been examined by i the inspector, Mr HI Stephenson, who [found that they are not fit for pioking this season, and it Las therefore been decided that they are not to> be opened." _■ -
