SHORTLAND FIRE BRIGADE STATION.
A NEW BUILDING REQUIRED. On returning the Shortland Fire Brigade shed was examined, and the dilapidated condition of the building commented upon. The building, which has been in, the present position for about 30 years, was formerly used at Grahamstown as a butcher's shop, and occupied by Mr Brown. "It was an old building then," remarked one of the councillors, aoid no one said him nay. Eb was stated that what is suggested is that a new station, 30ft frontage, and 48ft! deep, should be erected, and if the opinions expressed yesterday may be taken as aw indication the new fire brigade building is as good as new. The ERECTION OF A CENTRAL STATION was mentioned—this was advocated by Mr Poulgrain at the last meeting of the Council, the Council section in Pahau street being the site suggested—but. the proposal fell flat, and it was pointed out that if a, central station was built om the site mentioned the Grahamstown. and Shortland sheds would still be required. The general opinion was that it was imperative a. new -fire brigade: shed should be erected at once.—as a. matter of fact, the present, building is almost falling to pieces— and as it is anticipated that the cost will not be great (about £150) it will be money well spent. OTHER BOROUGH MATTERS. Ani examination was also made of the convenience now being erected in Central Pollen street, and the condition of the water table in Walter street, and the business of the day was completed—an informal meeting of the Council, which, we firmly believe, will: be a good point.
