The Paeroa Leases.
THE GOVERNMENT PROCLAMATION. PROTEST BjY. -ME MOSS, (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 10. The matter of the Paeroa leasehold* was before the House yesterday, when the Minister for Lands was asked by "Mr Moss when the sale of the leases would be held, the Land Commission's report having now been presented to Parliament. Im reply the Minister stated that "this matter will receive consideration." Mr Moss said this was the reply which lie had received several times last session. Wihen, the Premier was in Ohinemuri in March last he stated, mi reply to ft deputationi, that- as the matter of the lands was then before the Land Commission, nothing could be done at present. The Land Commission, however, in its report, dismissed th» subject by merely remarking that the matter was one •which, "called for inquiry." The Commissioners) had spoken about certaini dangers which they Ihad/encountered ml their /wanderings through the country, but it eeemed to him (Mr Moss) that thY greatest danger feared by them was that of running up against witnesses who would give evidence in- favour of the freehold. They dodged Paeros, and the nearest they got to that place To Aroha, the result being that thos* Paeroa residents who desired to'give evidence had to travel to Te Aroha' for tie purpose. He hoped. that" something more than "consider? ing" the matter would be done. Itseemod that the people of Paoroai wer? behig iblobKed in this^as wgll-ai in. olfier mattem Tlieise people.he. would remind the Government werq not Russians, who would take a floging lying down, and then kiss the rod. They did not care to b© flogged by the Premier's Cossacks in th© form of the Liberal and Labour Federation. If all these things were being done with, the object of penalising Paeroa» the Rremiee diould say so.
