MEETING

The usual meeting of the. Thames Iliglii School Board of Governor;*! was hold yesterday, and was attended by the Chairman, (Mr F- Trembath), and 'Messrs Po.iil<ira.iii, T- Uac'forc I',1', Wnv Scott., A- Burns, Ml Paul, and Theo-. Wood- Mr Jas- Rernick, seeretaiy, was also in attendance-

—A Protest.— The. secretaiy of the Thames Branch of the Auoklanid; Educational Institute, wrote: —"I ami directed to inform you; that, the report of Mr JasAdams submitted to the Board o£ Governors at their last meeting; was the .subject of adverse comment ot a meetingl of the Thames Branch' of the; Aiuqkland Education Institute, held on the 171h inst- The members not only deprecated the whole tone of the report, bub also questioned the fairness of 'Mr Adams' excuse for his inability toi prepare the pupils for the examination for re-appointment as free scholars. I haves also beet* instructed to request the Board! if they will kindly forward, for the consideration of the Branch, a cop}*- of the examination: papers referred to by Mi- Adams- In order that the free scholars may receive the full two years' tuition, and not. 18 months as at .present, the Branch respectfully suggests that except in the case of those who would be 'debarred by aga all entitled to free places should be admitted at the beginning of the first term only. In! this way the interests! of the pupils and the Board's revenue would alike be conserved- It may, interest the, Board to know that the: iAfucikland' Grammar 'Sicjliool adopts this, plan-"

Mr Isaacs desired! me to assure the; Board of tho willingness! of his Department to assist directly any of the various subjects prescribed taught in compliance with the. regulations', and at the same

Act, 1903,' governing the admission to freet places in secondary schools, clearly stipulates that all free scholars shall have* instruction in at least oue of tha subjects jpros'aribed under' the t'crhnicnl regulations, and it is quiteAvithin the; proviuco of the Education Department to- refute capitation; of which, -we ovo already roe-erring l«il than any school in tho colony, on. the whole of the Government free place scholars until such time as the conditions of the regulations are complied with- .Attached hereto are the annual returns of the Education Department; -showing 1 the amounts paid in capitation to the various secondary" schools under both 'The Technical Instruction Act' and the Secondary; Schools Act-"
