Tararu Sunday School.

ANNIVERSARY ' SERVICES.

The beautiful weather yesterday ensured the fulfilment of our forecast that the attendance .at the Tararu Presbyterian, (Sunday School aaaiversary services would :be encouraging to t'hiose oottineoted with the school. On, Saturday ji,fternoon ai number of busy workers were engaged in decora* ■ ing the interior of the building. Beauttiful nikau fronds^ /-obtained, by four of the Bible cas-; boys ,flauked the window frames and doors. Wreaths, for the most part the handiwork of the senior girls, hung between, while a florall arch of very handsome design... formed a effective background to the platform.' The children, w'bo were .present in forte, sang with considerable taste .and heartiness, hymns upeiiially selected' fo\m songisj amd solos, under the conduotorshipi of Mr W. H .Newton, who was ably assisted by Mis® Nelly Wilson at the harmonium. At t'lie evening service" Miss N*. Gibson saaig mose effectively the soh>> "Eternal lle*t.'' The afternoon senrioe was conducted by the Rev. T. A. Williams, whose text was : Proverbs xvi., 32. '"He that is slow to amger is better than the miighty, and he ' that ruleth Jus i»pirit than he that takefch a city." Having called to mind a number of mighy men, ,a.n.d having won .the attention not only of t'lie children, but als-oi of the adults, by telling of .the migihty deeds of Samson;, Sooratesi, Luther, Milton, Carey, Gariield, Gladstone, he -asked did any of his young hearer* think it possible to be batter than these? Yet. the text said they uould- be if—- if they were not quick, but were slow to anger. Then iti was no easy thing 1 to take a oity, iis the Boers found at Ladysmith, Kimberley. and Mafeking, ais the z^ebel Sepoys found, at Lucknow. Again, the achievements of Alexander of Macedon, of Julius Caesar, oif Oliver Cromwell, of Admiral Nelson, of Wellington, of Lord Roberts, were made to pass before the view of th« auditmt* anidl the lesson of the text duly enforced. At night, the pulpit was occupied l>y the Rev. A. D: Thomson, President of the Sunday School, vftwn first gave a little talk to the ohildren. on" the 2.'ird Psalm, dwelling pan-ticulairry on the words The Lord is My Shepherd," which, said he, every boy and: girl nrght if they would, -say ju'-t as tmly as David did," andl on) the last verse, 'Surely p'ck>diness and! mercy sWII. follow me all the days of my life,' whioh would be equally tme if like the Psalmist they put" their trust in God. Later on, he took as his text Mialaohi TIL, 16. "Then they that fewred the Lord, spake often with, one another atid t'lie Ixurd hearkened."."' deducting therefrom; the lessons of God's interest in: man, His kindnersi and His love, illustrating his discourse by numerous apt .anecdotes which kept the atten'tioiUfjOf old and ycung alike. Tlie collections amounted 1 to .£3. 13st —a i-liglit decrease on, last year, and it is Tibped that the Thursday meetings will result in coris-'dernble augmentation of the school funds.
