There wai? not a desire on his purl to* influence, any of the Opposition votes or tho votes of those wlio werei inclined to support the other side, but ■within the professed) ranks oif liberalism it was perfectly legitimate, .eyed * though it was late to attempt to oauir! bine forces to have a clear straight-; out fight. It was unfortunate "thati-. there was so many candidates in ther field oti> their side, and whether the( Government 'or someone else was toi bin me for that it was idle now "to dcaill, with that phase- oif the question. IS there was true consideration of party triumph Some sacrifices would have to' bo made that could only be left to 1 the. ctfiiimoiiscnse and good judgriient. OB - the candidaites and of the electors. Ifl. all the candidates went to the, poll','--aud there &cemcidi no hope of anyro-' tiring then the people of this electors ale who were in favour of the GoV-< eminent, and of the Libera.l partyj scoring would have toi solvei the 'dint- - cully by concentrating their votea in tlie direction calculated to bring about the success .desired. So far'aa ~ he cou'd see of the position it rested! entirely with themselves, and ho( would not presume to 1 dictate. Ha believed, however, thai at the las-ti momont they might be t able to sfuiK their differences in- order to get theiti force 9 concentrated. lie claimed'that} * under the circumstances the Govern- 1 ment were justified in selecting Mi*. Lundnn as their candidate hecausehej ran for the seat at" the last election, and stood all the consequences of de« . feat. The Government could not dol anything more than suggest a consolidation of the forces. It was for them! to decide by their vcrtes whether vietoiy would rest with the Go'Yernmenti party as against the Opposition.
Although the hour was late after! leaving the* Miners' Union Hall thet hon. gentleman was waited on by< rerl' prcsentatives of tha Liberal party, and it was past midnight "before hq. was done with them.
