Mr James Allen opened the debate ooi'ths Public Worts. Statement. He condemned thei manner in which, the expenditure an public works was being piled up, anid said the inevitable result mutet be an increase of taxation', wlnich, however, oowld be avoided if the Government would exercise: care and prudence
Sir J. G. Ward contended that the prosperity of tha colony justified th© increased; expenditure on public works and said in tlhle face of increased reYenuet and trade there was not the slightest possibility of any additional taxation being necessary.
Tile deßate was 'carried on by Messrs Massey, Napier, Herries, Fowlds, and Sir William Russell.
