Unemployed at Waihi.
A QUESTION BEFOItE THE
HOUSE
In the House Mr Jackson Palmer asked the Premier if he was aware that the Waihi miners' dispute was still pending: before the Arbitration Court,,and that the Company, it is alleged, have dismissed witnesses who gave evidence for the Union before the Conciliation Board, together with 150 others of the Miners' Union, many of whom have left for Australia ; and would the Premier therefore put the Paeroa-Waihi railway in hand n'c the Waihi end, to provide work and prevent many of the population leaving the colony?^ The Premier replied he was sorry to hear the men had been sacked, and said the Company was only injuring itself by coercive measures. His sympathy always would be with the oppressed, -whether employer or employee. He would consult with the Minister for Railways to see if he could not commence work as suggested at 'the Waihi end.
