WELLINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
WELLINGTON, March 29. At the aunual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the President said thau one subject discussed at the recent conference oi the Jiritish lyJiambers of Commerce was the adoption oi' a decimal system, and a vdsqlutioix was . carried urging upon tlie Imperial- Government that the metric system of weights and measures should be legalised in all-parts of the Empire except India, and after a period oi two years should' be reridj erecl compulsory, • meanwhile the sys- ' tern to' be thoroughly" taught in till public schools as a necessary branch of arithmetic. The • prospects of its adoption were, 'however, by no means near. To him it was amazing that the foremost commercial nation in the world should be so slow to adopt a system which has been approved, and to a greater or less extent- accepted, by every other nation in Europe. He hoped the Chamber would press upon the Government the desirability of introducing the system.
