In the House of Commons Mr J. E. Redwood moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply asking for Imperial credit for the compulsory wholesale purchase of land in Ireland. . '"
Mr T. W. Russell in a violent speech seconded, urging that .a timely concession should be made lest bloodshed would ensue. The land dwners were mere rentchargers.
The Hon. A. J. Balfour said that compulsion in the matter would be wild and ruinous, and would ruin the labourers. The Irish Lands Purchase "Acts had successfully created sisty thousand peasant proprietors. . -"' " '
■Mr Wyndhain,, Chief Secretary for Ireland, said it would be impossible to. risk 120 millions and plunge Ireland into litigation.
Sir Campbell- H. Bannerman supported tho amendment, which was rejected by" 235-to 140 votes.
The Irish Nationalists press remiuds tho electors that their claims will only be granted in response to turbulent violence and a refusal, to pay rents.
