Mr F. B. Allen, the Director of the Thames School of Mines, Las received one ton of quartz from the Big Beetle .mine at Mercury Bay for treatment. ' The quartz will probably be put through the .pan amalgamation process.
Mr D. G. MacDonnell,- well known in Auckland Stock Exchange and' mining circles, is at present , paying a visit to Thames.- Mr MacDonnell, who is intimately associated with.the mining indu*. try in this and other districts, returns to Auckland to-morrow.

A lad named Claude Harrison, • whose parents reside at Parawai, was playing in Pollen street yesterday when he slipped and fell off the kerbing. He< landed on his head and received a cut on the
right ear and a bruise at the side of his forehead. It is supposed that he slipped on some banana-peel that some 'careless individual had thrown oh the footpath.
At the inquest at Christchurch to-day on the body of Reuben Davis, killed by the traia at Middleton crossing; a. vesdict of accidental death was returned.
At Dunedin yesterday Wa Stanton, describing himseM at "Dr." Stanton, was fined £0 for dmproperly implying that he was a recognised medical practitioner. (This should prove a yarning to travelling medical quacks, who periodically pay visits- to this and other district^.
The Auckland Weekly News has this 1 week 12.pages of illustrations, mainly of the visit of the Imperial troops to Auckland. Portraits of Judge Cooper,?. Mr Arnold, and Miss A. Knight, also appear in the issue.
At the local bowling green yesterday the championship pair match Park and Newman v. Daviea and C. Adam, was played. Messrs Park and Newman's play was superior to that of their" opponents, and" they were leading by 9 at the last head, the scores being 24—15: A four-handed match—Burra, Milne, Bone, and Consant (skip) v. Eddowes, Dr.. O'Callaghan, Cantley, and Wood (skip)— was also played. After an interesting game victory rested with Wood's team, fined £10 for improperly implying that he the scores being 24 to 22. The championship pair match between E. W. Hollis and W. Price V... Wm. Burton and F. Trembath resulted in a win for the latter, the scores being 18—14.
