Last Night's Celebrabions.
SYDNEY, January 2.
THE ILLUMINATIONS. The city Un-night is magnificent. All tha illuminations are in full swing and in; better working order than last night. Dense throngs promenade the main- thoroughfares. The avenues of nations are gorgeous in the extreme Mid the scenic effect brilliant. The Post Office tower is a glittering column:, standing, sentinel like, in a great transformation scene, for it is that and nothing more. Electricity is chiefly employed, and at a given hour the movement of a few switches converts the darkening city into a picture of sparkling magnificence. CONVERSAZIONE. The conversazione at the Town Hall was v brilliant, if crowded assemblage. Two thousand guests attended. A musical programme was presented. .-. - ■■•"'■ ! MILITARY TATTOO. The military, too, had a gay gathering at the Barracks, where a military "tattoo" was conducted continually and held in the Domain which, together with ! the various parks, was transformed intoi j v fairly laaid. Myradds of colored lamps were intertwined with foliage and on every hill, at intervals, bands were stat- ' loned, playing popular airs. j
THE LATE SIR H. PARKES. The Highlanders, wound up the festivation of the day by a concert such as is dear to the hearts of Scottish sons and amidst all this rejoicing the one pathetic note is the honoring of the memory of the man who did so much to bring about the rejoicings of the hour—Sir Henry Parkes—the veteran who sleeps in seclusion at the Cemetery at Faulcon Bridge, and while yesterday's events were in progress, his grave was covered 'with beautiful wreaths. OFFICIAL DINNER. Lord Hopetoun entertained the high and guests at dinner. Honor was shown to New Zealand by placing Mr Seddon next to the Federal Premier.
