The Thames Star. Resurrexi. MONDAY, APRIL 23, 1900. THE QUEEN'S SYMPATHY.

In- our last issue it was stated that tV... mother of Lieut, Neave who r* sius-s near Christchurch, had received a letter of sympathy from Her J4 pty the Queen, 0» W «■*•* W

that gallant officer; The graceful act of the ruler of the vast British Empire, ,in recognising the merit of one of her soldiers, and in communica- \ ting with hia bereaved relatives, dis- j closes the fact that although a Queen, oui* beldved sovereign possesses the ; instincts of tha true woman and mother. She herself hasj been bowed down with grief, during her reign, through the loss of two of her 1 children—the Princess Alice in 1878 and the Duke of Albany in 1884—and can therefore readily understand the feelings of any woman who has been bereft of her son. It is, however, the genuine sympathy felt by Hei* Majesty for those in distress, and the simple manner in which she expresses her solicitude for 1 them, which has endeared her to the millions of her subjects who are living beneath hei beneficient rale. Moreover, even the least of Her Majesty's subjects is not thought unworthy of regard when circumstances appeal* to require n word of comfort or cheer from, the sovereign. The thousands of troops, now engaged in upholding the British flag in South Africa,, will be deeply touched when they notice that bravery is recognised by the Queen and that individual acts of heroism or intrepidity received her personal acknowledgement, and we may b& sure that the knowledge that their conduct is carefully watched by their sovereign, will act as an incentive to them to perform deeds of gallantry worthy of the best in the annals of the British army.
