At the "Mutual" on Thursday evening last the attendance of members was good, the business of the evening being a debate between Mr. McMillan and Mr. Shroff, the subject being "The Did Age Jt*enßions Act of I8y« la a Desirable Act." Mr. McMillan opened in tue anirmative, Mr. Shroff in'the. iuegative. Alter a discussion^ in whicfc 'iiessrs. Stewart, Huii, L. J. vßagnaii and A. E. Bagnaii toot, part; ■ the ne-. i gutive was deciai-ed carried by a ma jorityof one. i Afterwards Miss Bridson and Mrt> R. Doakin sang very pleasantly "b tke Dusk of the Twilight," and Mis. Bagnall was heard to advantage ii "Swallows." Miss Reea and Mrs. Wes ton played the accompaniments. On Monday evening w© had a lan tern lecture by Mr. E. H. Taylor, who represents the Good Templars on the temperance platform. There was a good attendance, and the lecture was listened to with great attention throughout, and it was well worth hearing. The schooner Gisborne has arrived to load timber for Timaru, and the cutter Sunderland is now loading for Auckland. . -'■■■ '•-
