I During the past year in the Trans- | vaal the t,otal value of the gold won I was £16,240,630,' being an'ipcrease of £4,586,905 on the figures for 1597. Up tothe end of 1898 the total value of gold produced was jE70,228,%63 since the opening of the fields. T^ie return'for 1898 places the Republic, by a large amount, beyond any other gold-producing country in the world, and represents 28£ per cent of the gold production of the world.
