Grey Memorial Day.
Auckland, February 18. That the memory of th««' G.0.M." of New Zealand is by no means on the wane, although the deceased statesman is now no more, was demonstrated in a most sympathetic manner to-day by the monster and representative, aa well as imposing, procession and very large gathering in the Domain. The Sir George Qrey memorial day will be long remembered by the present generation of Aucklanders, the proceedings being of the most enthusiastic and impressive nature. On the arrival at the grounds of the procession— which included school children, representatives of municipal bodies, friendly societies, and other organisations—the Mayor (Mr D. Goldiej opened the proceedings, after which a lengthy and eulogistic telegram was read from the Premier (Bight Hon. B. J. Seddon). Another telegram was read from the Mayor of Thames (Mr H. J. Greenslade) regretting that he was unable to be present, and expressing the sympathy of the Thames citizens with the gathering and demonstration to do honor to the memory of the deceased great statesman. Apologies were also read from Bishop Lenihan and Mr F. J. Moss (both of whose written remarks were subsequently read) and Rev. W, B. McKinney.
It was announced that Mr P. Dignant the ez-May«r, had donated £26 towards the memorial fund.
Eulogistic speeches were given, some of the addresses being very able deliveries.
The speakers were the Mayor (Mr D. Goldie), Sir G. M. O'Borke, Hon. J.A. Dole, Messrs W. Crowther, J. J. Holland, Henare Kaihau, J. Me(Wan, M.H R.s, F. E. Baume, Geo. Aldridge, W. J. Napier, and J. M. Shera, Oapt. D. H. McKenzie, Revs. Oanon Nelson, H. D. Dewsbury, and Rabbi Goldstein, and two or three uative chiefs.
The addresses were interspersed by musical and vocal selections by the Maori brass, band and the school children.
The demonstration was in every way a decidedly successful affair, and there can be no question that all who were present at the Domain will long remember the impression made upon their minds by the Grey memorial day.
