Miss Biiling, who has for several years laboured as a missionary in the New Guinea group of islands, preaoaed both morning and aveiiiug io large congregations at the Wesleyan Church, Pollen street, yesterday, the subject of her discourses on eacn occasion being relative to the mission work that is being cirried on by the noissiontri s amongst the natives of the islands referred to. She depicted in graphic language the good work i bat is being done to bring the natives under the influence of Chnntidnity, but stated there were yet large fields open for the Sowing of the good seed. Altog ther, she said, there were 300 isiands in the New Guinea group, and only four white missionaries at work, which meant an average of 75 islands t) eveiy missionary. As yet, however, the mission work extended to only iO of the islands, and to many these on the coast line only, so that there remained many of the inland villages yet unvisited by the missionaries. Miss Billing appealed to her hearers to become interested in missionary work, and was listened to with the greatest interest. This eveiiiug Miss Billing will deliver a lecture in the Wesleyan schoolroom, in which she will further deal with the mission work at present proceeding in New Guinea, and a practical illustration will be given of the style of dress usually worn by the native girls. No charge will be made for admission, Out a collection will be made on behalf of the Fereign Mission Fund. The proceedings will commence at 7.30. As various rumors are in circulation on the snbjuct, we think it desirable to state briefly tfian an action has been commeuocd in the Supreme Court, by Mr Wesley Spragg (lhe Mew Zealand Dairy Association) for a libel alleged to be contained in a letter forming part of the correspondence which has lately taken phce in our columns with reference to the dairy industry. We have placed the matter in our solicitor's hands, and, as the proceedings are now pending, we, of coarse, refrain from all comment thereon.—Waikato Argus.
