THE BIRTH RATE.
The birth rate for New Zealand has fallen from 31.22 per 1000 of population of all ages in 1888 to 25.74 in the year 1898. In 1897 the rate was 25.96, and this, although the lowest for all the Australasian colonies, was nevertheless almost equal to the rates obtaining in Victoria (26.63) and New South Wales (26.44.) In Tasmania, in the same period, the birth rate has declined at the rate of 5.38 per 1000 of the population; in
Victoria at the rate of 5.86; in South Australia at the rate of 6.90; in New South Wales at r.he rate of 7.70; in Queensland at the rate of 7.85; and in Western Australia at the rate; of 9.06. The death rate in New Zealand is by. far the lowest of the rates jfor the Australasian colonies. The deja,th rates per 1000 living in 1897 were: j New Zealand, 9.14; New South Waleß, 10.89; South Australia, 11.18; Queensland, 11.33; Tasmania, 11.53; Victoria, 12.83 ; Western Australia, 17.63.
