SATURDAY'S MATCHES.
A considerable number of interested spectators were present at Parawai on Saturday to witness the concluding matches of the local championship competition. At the outset attention was centred in the juniors for had United II succeeded in knocking off the 71 runs required, another match between High School and Tararu II would have been necessary. As will be seen from the subjoined scores United who batted one .man short could only make 47 of which Towers not out made 14 and McIntyre made 18. The result of this game gives Tararu the " double' —an honour which has not fallen to the lot of any club since the season 1892-3, when thesecompetitionswere instituted. The now moribund, if not defuuct, Thames C. C. carried off the honours for that season. This matter settled spectators and" players flocked to the lower end of the ground where Rovers were at the wickets facing the bowling of their old opponents, Tararu. The start was disastrous and the board had it been used would have shown successively l—i2-rO, 1-2—o, and 2—3—l. The first stand was made by the Rover skipper and F. Billing who put on 18 for the next wicket.. R. McGregor followed the good example set and getting Newton away for a 5 caused that bowler to be shunted in favour of Barrow. McGregor left at once caught in the long field by Newton off the first ball of Carter's next over and with the score at 46 Lang was caught by the fieldsman. The Hover captain's score was just sufficient to enable him to win the trophy cruet presented to the club for the player securing the highest average. Of the remaining, Morgan, who hit out lustily for 13. and Robertson alone made any stand, and with the score at 71 Howe was run put on his own call. With the light failing rapidly Tararu began their innings, and in a little over half an hour made 44 for the loss of their six best wickets. Carter was responsib'e; for nearly two-thirds of these, and was bowled by a short shooter, which broke slightly from .H. Lang in the last over sent down. The Rover fielding was in striking contrast to their opponents, who, both on Saturday and Saturday week, have, with but one or two exceptions, shown a great falling off from the form displayed by them during the season. The scores in these two matches were as follows :—
