TURUA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Turua, March 25.

On Thursday, the 18th inst., a large number assembled to consider the question of re-forming the Mutual Improvement Association. Mr H. N. Bagnali was voted to the Chair, and it was unanimously decided to re-form the Association. The following were elected to fill the various offices of the Society :—President: H. N. Bagnali; Vice-President: A. H. Shroff; Secretary and Treasurer: R. Odgers; Editor of Magazine: C. Whitmore; Committee: Mrs Osborne, Miss Bagnali, Miss Gillibrand, Messrs Percy and C, Davis, W. H. Bagnali, D. O'Neil, and H. Hull. During the evening, songs were sung by Messrs C. Davis, G. Thompson, and Hull, a recitation by C. Whitmore, duet (piano) Misses Gillibrand and Osborne, and overture (piano) Mr A. H. Shroff. Mrs Weston and Miss Eva Bagnali kindly played the accompaniments to the songs. It is not often that we can " blow" about the growth of plants, etc., but my attention has been called to the phenomenal growth of a bluegum tree, which was planted less than two years ago, it being then about 18ins high. It has now attained an altitude of over 15ft. Ido not think many places can beat that.

The latest pest seems to be getting rather numerous around about the district. I have heard of stoats or weasels, or both, having been seen and killed in several places not far from here. When the shooting season for ducks, etc., opens, sportsmen will have a chance of killing some of these vermin, which are the sworn enemy of pheasants, quail, etc., else in a year or two sport will be a scarce commodity.
