NAPlEE.—January 2.

Fred. Apperley, 14 years of age, was drowned while bathing at Hastings yesterday. Strenuous efforts were made by the deceased's brothers to save him, but failed. The body has been recovered.

Wellington:—January 1. Last night the streets were crowded, and remained so until an early hour this morning. The New i Year was ushered in quietly and larrikinism was conspicuous by its absence,. To-day the weather was glorious and every opportunity was taken by holiday seekers and there was a large attendance. The Premier states it has been decided to hold a conference of Australian Premiers at Hobart on the 2nd of February.
