AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND.
(Per Press Association )
Christchurch, November 26.
The cricket match Australia v. New Zealand, commenced at 12,15 p.m. at Lancaster 1 Park. The weather was fine and there was a fair attendance, Cuff was elected captain of the New Zealand team.
Trott won the toas and elected to bat first., sending in Iredale Jind Darling to the bowling of Upham and Robertsou. Runs came freely from the start, and 20 were posted after 10 minutes'play.
With his score at 10 Darling was missed at deep square by Ridley, and off Upham's same over Mills missed him at long-on. Runs still came freely until 43 had been scored, whenPearco took the ball from Upham, and in his second over the new bowler got Darling caught at long field on— 47__1_29.
Giffen filled the vacancy and the scoring became slower.. The fielding, which had been patchy, showed an improvement. With 60 up Neill went on vice Robertson.
At 77 Upham resumed bowling in pace of Pearce—lredale 40, Giffen 16 ; total for one wicket, 86. November 27. AUSTRALIANS MAKE 304. The Australians kept possession of the wickets all day, and ran up the score .of 304. Their batting throughout was not noted for any exceptional brilliancy or rapid run getting, but they, were more conspicuous for their care and ability to play tho ball between the ranks of the eager fieldsmen on the watch. The NewZealauders missed several catches, but on the whole fielded well, the ground work being exceptionally good and sure
The bowlers were handicapped by a cold biting wind, which stiffened their limbs, and at times rendered their deliveries short-pitched and inaccurate.
The fast run getting was whilst Kelly-was in, as he and Eady put on 90 runs in exactly 60 minutes
Iredale's display was thoroughly sound and correct one, and Kelly hit very hard. Eady, too, proved himself a batsman of no mean order, and his runs were well got. Trott and Giffen both played steadily and well, but Darling was over eager, and after being let off twice in long field, took no warning and fell at the third time of asking.
Wilding carried off the bowling Jwnors, and was hardly used enough.
