MANAGERS' REPORTS

OAMI3EIK

Tho raannger reports :-— tl Sinking on the main reef from No. 3 li.'vel hna been in progress during the week. There is, however, nothing fresh to mention, as there has been no quariz broken, workbeing confined (o putting down the dig. Tho country -is of a good description, being traversed with quartz veins and numerous mineral seiim?. If, however, retards progress very much. The leader being driven upon at, No. 3 level between Nos. 6 and 7 leaders, has shown nice colours of gold, while a pound or two of picked stone has also been saved. We are still seeing a little gold in the quartz coining to hand from No. 5 leader in the stopes. The supply of quartz, however, is rather limited as we are only saving a portion of the lead.—W. Baker."

HAZKLB\NK

The manager, reports:—" On the Young American leuJ ufc No. 1 level the ground around the winze mentioned in my last has been sernrerl, and a stopn started to meet the. one alrpady in progress. Them is a strong body of quat tz in the footwal! of this winze, which contains silica and other favourable minerals, and a little gold has a'so been seen in the quartz broken out. The drive on Kelly's lend west of tbe eros cut at No. 1 level is still beinc extended. In the face the lead is somewhat split up, but the quartz carries a nice class of mineral, amongst which gold ha*? been frequently seen. Two men have been engaged prospecting on Darby's lead in the stopes above the No. 1 level. At this point the lead is about six inches thick, the quartz has a kindly appearancf 1, and in a small portion broken out the other day gold was freely seen and a few pieces of fair picked stone were obtained. Crushing is proceeding, but, for the first few days the stuff was rather poor ; it is shaping a little better now, and will be completedabmit Wednesday (yesterday). —Matthew Paul."

SHERiDAN

The nmiagcr reports :—"The contractors for the extension of the low level crosscut have daring the past, week made fair progress, notwithstanding tbe tight class of the tuff formation they are meeting with, I referred in my last week's report to a head that had crossed the face of the level. I'was vm y hopeful that this head was ihe fore-miner of a belter description of country, but such is not tbe case, and tho same class of rock still exists. However, there may be a change for the better at any foot advanced in this direction. The distance driven for the \ieek is 6 feet,, which makes the total leogth of the tunnel 462 feet.—John VPILTJAMs."

VICTORIA

The manager reports :—" The western drive at the No. 2 level has been extended a distance of 20ft this week, but there is little change in the country. It still has the appearance of having been disturbed, and as we have been driving on a clay seam for some distance I think it just possible the lead may have been heaved to the right or left of the drive, consequently I have started to crosscut into the bangingwa'l for the purpose of proving this. Should it not be discovered in this direction I will put a drive into the footwall, to make sure that we are not driving; paral'el with it. It appears somewhat strange that it should be like this, as a lead was cat at the No. 3 level, and about the same distance in the hangiugwall of the Mariner's reef, as the one on upon the level above. It may be mentioned that the lead at the No. 3 level is a compact body of quartz of a goldbearing character, and the country is all that could be desired. Stopitig operations are still proceeding above the No. 1 level with encouraging results. On tbe eastern side of the winze sunk from the surface level the lead in tho stope looks vrry promising. Gold has been freely seen in the ma n portion, and also in em 11 stringers striking into it from the foolwall. A fsw feet further will bring this stope up <o the point where gold was obtained in ihe back of the drive. In tbe second stope oast of the crosscut the lead is 18 inches in thickness. The quartz contains a considerable amount of: mineral, amongst whi h gold has been fiv quently seen. Ihe second stope west is nearly up to the first breuk. '1 he lead is small, but it. is good crushing dirt, and J occasionally a few pounds of picked stoDe comes to hand from here. A third stope has been commerced on the western side of the crosscut. At. this point there is 2 feefc of crushing; dirt, being a network of i stringers, all of which are carrying a little gold. A little picked stone is frequenlly obtained from tho main portion, and it looks promising going up. wards in the back of the stope. Crushing is proceeding at Buil's batfc-ry.^lt shaped rather poor at first, but I am pleased to say it is doing much better now. ISOozs of amalgam have been obtained from tbe plates and berdans up to, Saturday morning last. Cleaning up will take place about the end of the week,—J^a. Cotjtts.1-'
