(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
Auckland, April 15. This afternoon is being observed as a business holiday, the Government offices also being closed on the occasion of the sports in aid of the Brunnerton fund, which promises to be a great success. Capt. Eussell, M.H.E. for Hawke's Bay, arrived here, last night by the Waihora. Hy left this morning for Waiuku to address a public meeting there this evening. Sir George Grey was 84 years of age yesterday. He was born April 14th, 1812.
Mr H. W. Northcroft, S.M., Judge of the Assessment Court, Auckland, sat yesterday afternoon in the Magistrate's Court and heard au objection lodged by Mr W. J. Speight, general manager of the Auckland, branch of the Government Insurance Department, to the local offices in Queen street being placed on the valuation roll for the City of Auckland. The property was assessed at £900 rateable value, and exemption was claimed on the ground that the building was vested in the Queen. After hearing the objections lodged by Mr Speight Mr Northcroft decided that the property was liable to be rated, and ruled accordingly.
