MINING NEWS.

MAY QUEEN. The manager reports as follows:—. "" The drive on the No. 4 reef is now in 314 feet. Since pickingupthereef through the eastern break, a distance of 20 feet has been driven. The reef is small at the point of intersection, but now is making larger again. Strong dabs of , gold were seen in the quartz broken. The leading stope is now alons between the two faults; here the reef is divided into two parts, the crushing dirt being three feet thick, and cold is seen nt each breakins. The second, third, and fourth stopes ac without change, the raef being 9ft wide, composed of a mass of small stringers, sold being frequently seen in the veins of quartz. The fifth stope is now along to the junction of No 2 reef. From this point going east the reef maks? out large, and the bulk -pi the crushing dirt comes from. here. The north-west driv#isnowin 372* feet, and during the week the reef made ont to 8 feet thick, which I believed to be the junction of No. 4 reef, but so far it has not had the effect of draining the water from the winze, and as I mentioned in the former report that the reef divides into two parts in the winze, the hangiugwall portion that the winze is snnk npon may be still in the hanging\wall. This will be proved as the drive on the No. 4 reef goins east is driven. From the present faceof No. 4 reef to the winze thedistance is 80' fret-, and I think it better to wait until this drive is further advanced before doing anything as regards driving into the hangingwall to prove it. Trenton section : The drive on No. 1 reef going east is in 32 feet from the crosscut and the reeH|S averaged 18 in h s thi k. dGroldvsp faj|p^ibeen seen at each breokof *he quartz from the |^rosse^t^%:lO; :winze has been taken s^^v*^P^o?r?orrow a starfc w''l k0 ?;inadeto"get'the level timbered up. Saxon " section : Nothing has been done in the winze below No. 3 level.. The same remarks will anply to the drive east of tha •break. In the ' stopes over No 3 the quartz coming to hand is payable, but so far this month has not produced much picked stone. At the battery,, the quartz is shaping for a payable return, having on hand 712 ounces of amalgam and 80 pounds of picked stone. —W. H. Burch/' ORLANDO. Tho manager reports as follows :— " Work in the mine has been continued as usual. There is nothing particularly fresh to report, with the exception that the leading stope being advanced eastward on tha reef is now along 80 feet from the rise and on breaking down the reef during the week strong colours of gold w.ere freely seen through the general ore. Seeing gold at thi« point and in this direction Speaks well for the blgck

over head and also shows that the length of the block will be considerable. The other stopes are all well forward and oii«ht >o produce a fair amount of crushioß material.—S. Howard." CAMBRIA. The manager reports as follows: — " Driving on No. 4 leader from the bottom of the winze towards the main reef waa suspended during the week owing to the air becoming gaseous Thedrivefrora I the main winze leading to No. 4 level is now being pushed ahead as quickly as possible to connect with the former i winze. This should bo completed about Ih3 end of the week. Prospecting can tlien be carried on on the main reef No. 4 and other leaders to more advantage A promising looking leader about 4. niches in thickness has just been met with crossing the face of the above mentiosed drive, and striking towards the main reef. Several pieces of quartz BhowItag strong blotches of gold have been obtained from this. The quartz from No. 7 foofcwall leader in the leading stope ivS showing gold pretty freely and should be of a fair grade. There is very little change in No. 1 leader in the stopes, the quartz asusual showing gold pretty freely. Crushing is proceeding and will probably be finished at ths end of the week.— W, Baker." OCCIDENTAL. The manager reports as follows: "Since driving operations were commenced at the Occidental tunnel to intersect the Hague Smith reef, a distance of 113 ft has been driven. I am pleased to inform you that the country now being penetrated is of a first-class description, and should the reef be met with in the same class of sandstone as now exists, I have every reason to believe that payable gold will be found. On Friday last, we intersected a flinty 4 inches thick, crossing the drive at almost right angles. Since cutting through the flinty mentioned above, a little water has been issuing from the face, which is an indication of quartz being near at hand. North Star section : The drive now in progress upon the North Star leader lias been advanced a further distance ©f 13ft for the week, making a total distance of 180 ft driven from the main crosscut. The country now being penetrated continues to be of a good description for gold. There is not much difference in either the width or appearance of the leader to report. Some of the quartz coming to hand looks very kindly, and continues to carry minerals of a very favorable character.—Thos. Moyle."
