THE LICENSING ELECTIONS.
APATHY AT COKOMANDEL,
Coromandel, Saturday. Yesterday's News, in the course of a leading article on the licensing election, says:—" The time for holding the licensing elections and likewise for taking the local option poll is drawing nigh, and yet there does not appear to be any move made either by those desirous of seeing the present number of licenses renewed or by those who wish the number of licensed houses reduced. It is high time the inhabitants of Caromandel County bethought themselves of selecting suitable candidates for the position of licensing committeemen, if it if desired that we should not be entirely governed in licensing matters by the Thames. . . . The chairman of the committee will be entitled to select which courthouse within the district the licensing meetings shall be held at, so that the probability is that applicants for renewal of licenses, &c, will have to journey to the Thames in support of their application or else engage a solicitor to appear on their behalf. The Thames is the most thickly populated portion of the district, has the preponderance of voting power, and will be able to return a majority of members on the committee, so that even under the most favorable circumstances this portion of the district will to a great extent be at the mercy of the Thames. It therefore behoves the residents of Goromandel County to ponder over the matter, and to select two or three good men to put forward as candidates."
