In the Council yesterday afternoon the Goldfields Committee recommended that the Mining Act Amendment Bill (No. 1) be allowed to proceed with slight amendments.
The Electoral Bill was read a first time, the second reading being fixed for Thursday. .#
SUPPLYING LIQUOR TO CHIL-
DREN'S BILL.
On the second reading of the Intoxicating Liquors Supply to Children Bill | being moved Sir P. Buckley characterised the Bill as having neither head, body, nor tail, besides which its features were too drastic and would defeat their intentions. He hoped that the Bill would not be proceeded with until the proposed Licensing Bill was introduced by the Government. The Bill was lukewarmly supported by several members, and eventually read a second time. The Fencing Act Amendment Bill and Agricultural and Pastoral Bill were read a second time. The motion for the third reading of the Public Domains Act Amendment Bill was discharged from the paper, and the Council adjourned. THE GOVERNMENT AND THE MAIN ROADS. On the motion that the House should go into Committee of Supply, Mr Jackson Palmer moved an amendment," That the Government should take over and metal the main road north of Auckland." Several members urged upon the Government the necessity that exists for maintaining the roads in that locality,and keeping them open for traffic, After a short debate the amendment was negatived on the voices. PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT. Mr Rolleston again urged the Premier to indicate when the Public Works Statement might be looked for. Several members having spoken on: the matter, Mr Seddon deprecated the waste of time that went on, and eaid that taking into account the reduced numbers there was much more talk than formerly. The Government were anxious to get certain legislation passed before the Public Works Statement was brought down THE ESTIMATES.
The House then went into Committee of Snpply for the r consideration of the Estimates, 'lhe votes for the Colonial Treasurer's Department, Customs and Marine Department, Government Insurance, and Public Trust Office were agreed to without alteration, After an exhaustiy c discussion progress was reported, and the House rose at 3.30 a.m,
