MINING NEWS.

HAZELBANK

The manager reports :—"The drive is still being extended eastward on Darby's at the No. 2 intermediate level. In the face there are two distinct leaders, dmded by about 6 feet of mullock, and the footwall portion appears to be the principal one. It is a foot thick, and continues to carry zinc blend and other favorable minerals, amongst which gold has also been frequently seen. I intend to follow this portion, as i considerable quantity of mullock would have to be broken to carry the two in one drive, and there ia a possibility of them coming together again as the drive advances. The leading stope over the western drive at this level has been carried along 10 feet. This lead is very heavily mineralised, and in breaking out the quartz colors of gold have beeu freely seen. Stoping on thi9 lead above the No. 1 intermediate level is being continued, from which a fair amount of payable crushing dirt is being obtained. As the seventh stope is carried aloDg a continuation of the drive at No. 1 level is being formed. This will save a considerable amount of labor, aa the quartz, &c, broken out above this will be trucked direct to the shaft instead of, as hitherto, sending it down the passes to No. 3 level. 151 bs of picked stone have been obtained from these stopes during the week. In drive at No. 1 reef at No. 3 level, there is a change in the country. It is of a softer nature, but the reef is small, composed of gritty quartz, some of which looks kindly for gold. As no gold has been seen in the crossreef in the second stope above the No. I intermediate this week, I have started a third stope from the winze. Crushing is still proceeding, and will not be completed before Tuesday (to-day), as there is a good deal of tailings to grind. 96 loads have been through the stamps for 7710z5, amalgam, squeezed in cold water.— Jas. Cotjtts."
